
When he was 27, he enrolled at the National Theatre School of Denmark at which point he graduated in 1995. Apart from his role as The Killing's lead actor as well as his appearance in two other critically well-known Danish dramas: Those Who Kill, and Borgen III. He also appeared in episodes of BBC drama Sherlock as Charles Augustus Magnussen (blackmailer). He played the Russian president in the American television show House of Cards. In 2018, he was awarded an International Emmy Award for his part as the Russian president in the Danish television drama Herrens Veje. This was broadcast in the UK as Ride Upon the Storm in 2019. In addition to his mother tongue Danish, Mikkelsen speaks fluent Swedish, German and English and has learned various accents. According to Mikkelsen's account that he and his younger brother were taught English by studying Monty Python records.
